Semiotics

In todays lesson, we all learnt about semiotics. Semiotics is simply the study of signs and anything that may stand for something else.
  • The actual definition of semiotics is: 'the study of signs and symbols and their use or interpretation'
Everyone reads the images in pictures in an attempt to decode them and make sense of what they mean to us as an audience.
Semiotics can be broken down into two key parts -
  • Denotations - what we see when we look at an image (what is it?)
  • Connotations - what we understand from this image (what are the meanings behind the picture?)
Learning what each of the two key parts of semiotics mean we then after had to do some practice and use our knowledge of the definitions of denotations and connotations to break down these four key colours.
